We Want to Ensure Patients in Toronto Have Access to Dental Care

If You Don't Have Access to Dental Insurance, You May be Eligible for the CDCP

Good oral health is essential to overall well-being, but for many Canadians, the cost of dental care can be a barrier. This is where the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) comes in: a government initiative designed to make dental care more accessible for eligible individuals and families. If you’re wondering how to apply and what else you need to know, we're here to help.

What You Need to Apply

Apply Online for the CDCP

The CDCP aims to provide affordable dental services to individuals and families who lack private dental insurance and meet certain income thresholds. The plan includes coverage for preventive care, basic dental treatments, and certain procedures that are critical for maintaining oral health.

Eligible Canadian Residents Must:

  • Not have access to dental insurance
  • Must have filed their tax returns for the previous year (along with their partner)
  • Have an adjusted family net income of less than $90,000
  • Must be a Canadian resident

The Steps to Apply for the CDCP

  • Visit the Government of Canada website and scroll down to the green "Apply" button
  • Check the application schedule - not all phases are open yet
  • Gather the following documents to make applying easier
    • Social Insurance Number
    • Date of Birth
    • Full Name
    • Home and Mailing Address
    • List of dental coverage through government social programs (if applicable)
    • You and your spouse or common-law partner (if applicable) must have filed your tax return for 2023 and have received your Notice of Assessment
  •  If you can't apply online, apply by phone: 1-833-537-4342

You Can Apply for Yourself if You Fall Under the Following:

  • Are 65 or older
  • Are 18 to 64 and have a valid Disability Tax Credit certificate
  • Are 16 or 17 and live independently from your parents or have a child who you are also applying for

You Can Apply on Behalf of Your Children if:

  • You are 16 or older, and the parent or legal guardian of the child
  • The child is under 18 years old

To ensure a smooth application process, keep all your documents in one place for easy access. Demand for this program is high, so apply as soon as you’re eligible to avoid delays. If you’re unsure about any part of the process, reach out to the CDCP. You can check the status of your Canadian Dental Care Plan application here. Check off whether you are checking the status for yourself or for your child, and click "Continue.”

What is Covered by the CDCP?

This Dental Care Program Will Help Cover the Cost of Your Care

Just remember that the CDCP will help pay for a portion of the cost, but not provide full coverage. If you qualify for the Canadian Dental Care Plan, examples of services that could be covered include:

  • Dental Exams
  • X-Rays
  • Cleaning and Scaling
  • Permanent and Temporary Fillings
  • Root Canal Treatment
  • Abscess Treatment
  • Complete Dentures
  • Tooth Extraction

To see the full list of dental care services that may be covered, visit the Canadian government website here. Click on the arrows next to "Diagnostic and preventive services," "Basic services," etc., to expand the sections. Scroll down further for more information on how much will be covered and how co-payments work.

What Happens After Approval?

Receive the Oral Health Care you Deserve

If you have met all eligibility requirements and have been approved to receive dental care under the CDCP, you’ll receive an identification number or card to present to participating dental clinics. It's important to note that dental offices may individually choose whether or not they accept patients under the CDCP. To find a dental office that is taking part, you can search for them on the Sun Life website or call your dental office.
